Description:
Bronze with whitish gray patina (light pewter patina) on body, and light Renaissance Brown patina on horns. Number 12 in an edition of 15. Signed: "De LUE / sc 1931 / © '87 / 12/15 Tx". Cast at the Tallix Foundry in Beacon, NY. Mounted on Imperial Black marble base measuring 1 1/2 x 9 x 7 inches. In fine condition. "As with Pegasus, De Lue drew on an animal from Greek mythology and gave him supernatural power and a joyous cavorting character. De Lue first patinated the plaster in a pewtery silver and patined the bronzes to conform. However, he enjoyed with this sculpture, more than almost any other, exploring the range of patinas that would reveal new sensibilities and nuances in the work. The three casts illustrated here suggest the range of possibilities that include black, gold, green, and brown" from D. Roger Howlett "Donald De Lue: Gods, Prophets, and Heroes," 1990, pg. 22.
