| Childs Gallery has been chosen to represent the estate of the New England painter and printmaker, Chauncey Ryder (1868-1949). While Ryder is mostly known for his evocative landscape paintings, he also produced a large body of drypoints and lithographs, many of which have not been seen by the market in decades. Like his paintings, these idyllic prints, more traditional in nature, provided a welcome counterpoint to the modernism that many critics and consumers were not yet ready to accept. As abstract, modern, and avant-garde art became widely accepted in the marketplace, Chauncey Ryder’s work became underappreciated and undervalued and lost the prestige it had enjoyed for so many decades. Childs Gallery expects that in reassessing the work of Chauncey Ryder, the artist will once again enjoy the appreciation and admiration of collectors and the public at large. |
