Art within Art
It is not really surprising that artists have long been interested in art and artists as subjects for their art. All self-portraits are an artist's personal assessment of his visual effect at a moment in time. Some artists repeatedly confront this in the mirror as a favorite subject. For others the self-portrait is rarely or never addressed.
But, other art subjects have also interested artists including patrons at exhibitions, critics before paintings (often not flattering to the critics), studio interiors, still-life with artists' tools, and caricatures including portrait galleries in order to make political points. We invite you to browse the selection below and immerse yourself in art within art.
