| An adventurous and creative spirit brought the already widely traveled Dolice from his native Vienna to New York City in 1920. Encouraged by friends such as Ash Can artist George Luks, and inspired by the energy and romance of Manhattan, Dolice sang the city’s praises in his varied and richly detailed depictions of famous architectural landmarks, city streets and dock scenes. In his comprehensive exploration of Manhattan, Dolice captured the intimate, quiet, and sometimes gritty city in his portrayal of dark interiors, ballet dancers, book shop keepers, and tenement buildings. Although Dolice traveled the East Coast recording scenes of other cities throughout his career, he always returned to Manhattan. His works are an ode to the city he loved. |
